Broncos Advance 17 to 2012 NCAA West First Round

BOISE, Idaho - Boise State's track and field program learned on Thursday (May 17) that 17 Broncos have earned 20 qualifying spots in the 2012 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Round held in Austin, Texas, May 24-26. The Broncos' 17 qualifiers are the second-most in school history to advance to the NCAA First Round (most was 20 athletes in 2007).

Boise State will have 11 men and six women competing in the NCAA West First Round.

Senior Trevor Kraychir qualifies for the NCAA First Round for the fourth-straight year, entering the meet as the 39 th-ranked hammer thrower in the west. Will Lohman will join him in the hammer throw in his first year competing as a Bronco, while also competing in the shot put, holding rankings of No. 48 and No. 47, respectively.

Chase Sexton joins the pair in the throws, qualifying in his third-straight season for the NCAA First Round discus throw. This year he enters the meet ranked 28 th. On the women's side of the throws, Sasa Kampic earns her third trip to the first round in the javelin, ranking 48th this season. Mele Vaisima will compete in her second-career first round meet in the hammer throw, while Alyssa Osai joins her for the first time. The pair ranks 12th and 26th in the hammer, respectively.

Boise State's distance crew qualified six to the NCAA West First Round, including Emma Bates who earned the No. 22 spot in the 5000-meters and No. 28 spot in the 10000-meters. This will be her first trip to the first round and she is one of three Broncos to double up on events.

Drew O'donoghue-McDonald and Charlie Petrie earned the 36 th and 44th-ranked spots in the 1500-meters, while Allan Schroeder is ranked 20th and Sawyer Bosch is ranked 23rd in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Bosch will make his third trip to the NCAA First Round. Scott Foley rounds out the distance crew as the 44th-ranked runner in the 10000-meters.

In the hurdles, Rolando Trammel qualified as the 30 th-ranked competitor in the 110-meter hurdles, as well as the 25th-ranked competitor in the 400-meter hurdles in his third trip to the first round. Justin Malnes will join him for his first trip in the 110-meter hurdles, ranking 33rd.

Eetu Viitala will make his third trip to the first round as well, competing as the 42 nd-ranked long jumper. Racquel Jones will also compete in the long jump, making her second trip to the meet as the 43rd-ranked competitor. Deb Johnson earned her first trip to the first round after ranking 33rd in the triple jump.

The Broncos are each a part of a 48-person field in their respective events in the west division. They will compete to become one of the top-12 in their events throughout their qualifying rounds at the NCAA West First Round in order to advance to the NCAA National Championships held in Des Moines, Iowa, June 6-9. There they will meet 12 qualifiers from the NCAA East First Round (Jacksonville, Fla. / North Florida) to compete for national titles.

One Bronco, Kurt Felix, has already earned his spot at the national meet in the decathlon (ranked No. 4), an event that is not contested in the NCAA First Rounds.
