Nine Broncos Qualify for NCAA West Preliminary Round

BOISE, Idaho - After returning home from the 2011 Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, nine Broncos have earned a chance to continue their season at the 2011 NCAA West Preliminary Round in Eugene, Ore., May 27-28.

Eight Bronco men and one woman have earned marks that sit amongst the top-48 marks on the NCAA Division I West POP List in their respective events.

Junior Alex Nelson holds the highest ranking by a Bronco on the NCAA West list, sitting at No. 11 in the men's hammer throw. Junior Trevor Kraychir joins in qualifying for the event after sitting at No. 21 on the list.

Sawyer Bosch, also a junior, is a highly ranked competitor in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase, entering with a No. 12 ranking.

Junior Eetu Viitala also holds a high rank, sitting at No. 15 in the west in the men's long jump. His counterpart on the women's side, Racquel Jones, qualifies in the women's long jump with a No. 32 ranking.

Additionally in the throws will be Pontus Thomee, a senior, who qualifies as the No. 20-ranked javelin thrower, while teammate and redshirt freshman Alex Cartwright qualifies as the No. 34-ranked javelin thrower.

Chase Sexton, also a junior, earns a spot in the men's discus competition after earning a No. 29 spot on the list.

Joining Bosch on the track, sophomore Rolando Trammel is a double qualifier, advancing as the No. 36 400-meter hurdle qualifier and the No. 43 110-meter hurdle qualifier.

The majority of this year's Bronco qualifiers have participated in past NCAA First Round and Regional events.  Only two are first-time qualifiers for the NCAA First Round.

Thomee enters the post-season as the 2010 NCAA West Preliminary Round Javelin Champion, while also earning the national runner-up title that same year. He is a two-time All-American in the javelin and was also a two time NCAA Regional qualifier (what was formerly contested before the NCAA Preliminary Rounds prior to 2010).

Kraychir and Nelson were both 2010 NCAA Preliminary Round qualifiers in the hammer, as well as 2009 NCAA West Region qualifiers. Bosch, Viitala and Trammel each saw their first NCAA action last season at the 2010 NCAA Preliminary Round in Austin, Texas. Sexton was a qualifier for the 2010 meet as well, but did not compete. Jones and Cartwright are the two first-time qualifiers for any NCAA meet.

A handful of possible last-minute declarations or withdrawals could result in adding a few additional Broncos to the list of qualifiers. Those athletes will be announced after the closing of declarations on Thursday if needed.

The NCAA Preliminary Round is split to two locations, the west round will be hosted by the University of Oregon in Eugene, Ore., while the east round will be hosted by Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. To qualify for the meet, athletes must sit in the top-48 of either their east or west region lists in their respective events to advance to the meet. Some athletes may qualify if they are near the top-48 and a participant ahead of them on the list does not declare or withdraws.

Those who qualify from the east and west preliminary rounds will advance to the 2011 NCAA National Championship meet will be held at Drake Stadium on the campus of Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, June 8-11.
