Kurt Felix Leads Decathlon after First Day at WAC Championships

RUSTON, La. - Day one of competition at the 2010 Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships has come to a close Wednesday evening (May 12) with Boise State's Kurt Felix holding the lead after five events in the men's decathlon. Felix earned three event wins as well as setting two personal bests and two outdoor bests in his first day efforts.

"Overall I felt like it was a good day," said Felix. "I didn't do as well as I would have liked in the long jump and the shot put, but I did come back and run a PR in the 400."

The heat and humidity seemed to have little effect on Felix, who scored 4,004 points in his first day of competition. The point total puts him 113 points ahead of pace to hit his best decathlon score of 2010, which was 7,220 points at the California Invitational.

"The humidity wasn't a factor for me at all today because I'm from the Islands so I am accustomed to it," explained the St. Davids, Grenada native.

Felix started the day off with the 100-meter dash where he came in third with his personal best time of 11.03 seconds. He took over the overall lead for the decathlon when he won the long jump with his outdoor best mark of 23 feet, 5.25 inches. In the shot put he threw for 38 feet, 1.50 inches to come in the runner-up spot, but bounced back with a first place finish in the high jump, clearing an outdoor best mark of 6 feet, 10.75 inches. In the final event of day one for the decathlon, Felix clocked a personal best time of 49.80 seconds in the 400-meter dash to win the event and secure the leading spot heading into day two of the ten-event competition.

Thursday's five events begin with the 110-meter hurdles, followed by the discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and the 1500-meter run. If Felix can keep up his successes through Thursday's final events in the decathlon, he will likely be sitting amongst the top-three on the all-time performers list at Boise State in the event.

"I just need to do the same thing that I did today and that's work hard," said Felix.

Tomorrow's events begin at 1 p.m. with the sixth event of the men's decathlon, the 110-meter hurdles, followed by the fifth event of the women's heptathlon, the long jump, beginning at 1:30 p.m.

The men's decathlon and women's heptathlon wrap up on Thursday at the Jim Mize Track Complex at Louisiana Tech University. The rest of the Bronco track and field squad will join Felix for the individual and relay events on Friday and Saturday (May 14-15).
