Broncos Prepare for WAC Outdoor Championships in Boise

The Meet - The Boise State University track and field team will be competing in the 2008 Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, May 14-17, at the Ed Jacoby Track in Bronco Stadium at Boise, Idaho.


The first two days of the competition, May 14-15, will feature only the multi-events, with the decathlon starting both days at 1:00 p.m., and the heptathlon starting daily at 1:30 p.m.


The track and field events will begin Friday, May 16, with the men’s hammer toss at 12:30 p.m., and the women’s 3,000m steeplechase at 2:00 p.m. The finals of the majority of the track events will be held Saturday, May 17, starting with the women’s 4x100m relay at 5:00 p.m.


The Bronco Men - The Boise State men’s track and field team will be competing against Idaho, Louisiana Tech, Fresno State and Utah State for its first WAC Outdoor Championship since 2006.


The men currently have six student-athletes ranked on the NCAA Performance List.


Simon Wardhaugh is ranked seventh in the NCAA and first in the Western Athletic Conference in the hammer throw with an West Regional qualifying toss of 224-2 (68.34m).


Jarrod Stevens is ranked 11th in the nation and second in the WAC in the hammer toss with a career-best mark of 219-0 (66.77m).


Ryan Grinnell sits atop the WAC and is ninth in the nation in the triple jump with a mark of 52-8.75 (16.07m). He is also ranked 16th in the long jump with a mark of 25-6 (7.77m) and 35th in the high jump after clearing a height of 6-10.75 (2.10m).


Savvas Diakonikolas set the Boise State school-record in the long jump May 2, at the Bronco Twilight as he leaped 25-9.25 (7.85m) to rank 13th in the nation.


Zacharias Arnos earned an NCAA West Region qualifying standard in the triple jump as he posted a 51-2.25 (15.60m) at the Azusa Pacific Invitational to rank 25th on the NCAA performance list.


Senior Nate Putnam is ranked first in the WAC and 47th in the NCAA in the javelin toss with a mark of 212-1 (64.65m).


Nick Cunningham is ranked second in the WAC in the 200m dash with an NCAA West Region qualifying time of 21.20. He is also ranked third in the WAC in the 100m dash with a time of 10.61.


The Bronco Women - The Boise State women’s track and field team will be competing against Idaho, Fresno State, Louisiana Tech, Nevada, Hawaii and New Mexico State for its first ever WAC Championship. 


Three women have already earned NCAA Regional qualifying standards.


Eleni Kafourou is ranked nationally and first in the WAC in both the long jump and the triple jump. She is ranked fourth in the long jump with a mark of 21-5.50 (6.54m) and 23rd in the triple jump with a distance of 42-6 (12.95m).


Kayleen McDowell improved her regional qualifying standard in the 800m dash at the Robinson Invitational with a time of 2:08.88. She is currently ranked first in the WAC and 20th in the west region in the event.


Megan Olivetti earned her regional qualifying in the 100m hurdles as she posted a 13.92 at the Sun Angel Track Classic Apr. 12. Her time ranks her 18th in the NCAA West Region and first in the WAC.
