Felix Leads, Morton in Third in MW Multi-Events

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Boise State's Kurt Felix and Alexi Morton kicked-off the 2012 Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Wednesday, finishing day one of the multi-events in first and third, respectively, at Air Force's Cadet Track and Field Complex.

Felix won four of the day's five events in the decathlon to lead the competition by 268-points. He has totaled 4,201-points with five events to go, sitting just 11-points shy of his day one total when he hit the Olympic "B" Standard earlier this year.

Morton holds a season-best day one total of 3,038-points after four events, sitting in third overall.

Felix, a redshirt senior, began his day with a third-place finish in the 100-meters, running 11.16-seconds. He went on to win the next four events jumping 23'-10.25" in the long jump, throwing an outdoor career-best of 45'-1.50" in the shot put, clearing a season-best 6'-11" in the high jump and smashing his recently-set career-best in the 400-meters with a time of 48.63-seconds.

The St. David's, Grenada, native sits 268-points ahead of New Mexico's Richard York who holds the second-place spot in the field of nine competitors.

Morton had two season-best marks on the day in the high jump and 200-meters. She started out the day with a third-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking a 14.59-second race. She cleared 5'-5.75" in the high jump to place second and threw 32'-8.25" to place sixth in the shot put. She closed out the day with a 26.01-second time in the 200-meters, placing fourth. She sits 67-points ahead of her day one season-best.

The Auburn, Wash., native sits in third while San Diego State's Allison Reaser leads with 3,355-points and Colorado State's Cate Brus sits in second (3,084-points) in the eight-person field.

Both Felix and Morton will continue their multi-event competitions on Thursday, May 10. Felix will begin his five-event day at 12 noon (MT) with the 110-meter hurdles, while Morton will begin her three-event day at 12:30 p.m. (MT) with the long jump.

The Mountain West Championship open events begin on Thursday with the men's hammer throw at 5 p.m. (MT). The remainder of open events will be contested on Friday (May 11) and Saturday (May 12).
