Bates Repeats as MW Athlete of the Week

May 6, 2014

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Emma Bates has been named the Mountain West Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week for meets held April 29-May 5. The honor is Bates' second in the last three weeks. The redshirt junior from Elk River, Minn., was previously bestowed with the honor on April 22 for meets held April 15-21.

Bates traveled to Stanford Calif., along with Marisa Howard, Allan Schroeder and Zach Wiles to compete in the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational. Bates ran in the 10,000m and placed 13th among 37 of the best runners in the world.

She ran against the silver medalist of the 2012 Olympics and 2011 World Championships, Sally Kipyego; the 2013 NCAA 10,000m champion, Betsy Saina; and the 2013 U.S. runner-up in the 5,000m, Molly Huddle. Kipyego won the race on Sunday with a 30:42.26.

Bates' 32:20.83 broke her career-best time, the school record and the MW all-time record in the 10,000m. She now holds the MW all-time records in both the 5,000m and the 10,000m. She is one of three MW women's athletes to currently hold MW all-time records in multiple events.

Bates currently has the fastest 10,000m time in the MW and the second-fastest time in the nation. She was the top collegiate finisher in the 10,000m at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational this past Sunday.

Next up for the Broncos is the MW Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Laramie, Wyo., May 14-17. Bates will run in both the 5,000m and the 10,000m.
