Broncos Flourish in Day One of Idaho-Utah Border Clash, Oregon Relays

BOISE, Idaho - The Boise State throwers were the highlight of Friday (April 30) evening in the opening events of the Idaho-Utah Border Clash. The meet features the Broncos and Northwest Nazarene teaming against Utah State and Weber State in a dual between the two states. Friday night's section, featuring the men's javelin and men's and women's hammer, was the first of the two day meet with the majority of the field events and all running events being contested on Saturday at the Ed Jacoby Track in Bronco Stadium.

Boise State started the day with a first and third-place finish in the men's javelin, with senior Pontus Thomee winning the event with his mark of 218 feet, 6 inches. Junior Kurt Felix placed third in the event with his mark of 192 feet, 3 inches.

The Bronco men also picked up a first and second-place sweep in the men's hammer on Friday. Sophomore Alex Nelson had a near season-best throw of 197 feet, 11 inches to win the event while fellow sophomore Trevor Kraychir pulled in a mark of 196 feet, 3 inches for a runner-up title.

In the women's hammer, freshman Alyssa Osai produced a five-foot personal-best mark of 172 feet, 7 inches to place second. Junior Mele Vaisima had a mark of 167 feet, 4 inches to place fourth, while sophomore Nadine Russell bettered her career-best by two feet to a mark of 164 feet, 7 inches for a fifth-place finish.

OREGON RELAYS
Also competing on Friday evening at the Oregon Relays in Eugene, Ore., were four Bronco distance runners.

Kicking-off the Oregon Relays for the Broncos was Sawyer Bosch, Zach Wiles and Kevin Higgs in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Bosch recorded a personal-best time of 8 minutes, 57.84 seconds to place fourth out of the 21 runners in the race. His time was only 1.6 seconds out of the Boise State all-time top-three performances in the event. Wiles also recorded a career-best time by a three-second improvement, running a time of 9 minutes, 14.09 seconds to finish in eighth-place. Higgs ran a respectable time of 9 minutes, 24.04 seconds to round out the Bronco competitors in the race, placing 16th overall.

Freshman Jeff Howard also competed at the Oregon Relays, racing in the men's 5000-meter run. The 2010 WAC Indoor Track and Field Freshman of the Year crushed his career-best in the event by 10 seconds, running a time of 14 minutes, 29.93 seconds to place ninth out of 18 runners.

The four Broncos at the Oregon Relays wrap up their appearance in Eugene Friday night, but the rest of the Broncos will take to the track in Boise on Saturday for the final day of the Idaho-Utah Border Clash. The final meet of the season will begin at 10 a.m. with the women's javelin and men's pole vault. The running events kick off at 12 noon with the 4x100-meter relays and are slated to finish at 3:55 p.m. with the 4x400-meter relays.
