Kafourou Garners First WAC Honor of 2010

DENVER - Boise State's Eleni Kafourou has been named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Women's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week for the week of April 19-25. It is her first conference honor of the season.

Kafourou, a senior from Athens, Greece (Ninth Lykeium of Pireas HS), set season-best and WAC-leading marks in both the long jump and the triple jump at the BYU Robinson Invitational on Friday and Saturday, winning both events. Kafourou's mark of 6.39 meters (20 feet, 11.75 inches) in the long jump is sixth in the NCAA West First Round Championships performance list and ranks eighth in the nation. The senior's leap of 13.04m (42-9.50) in the triple jump is tied for fifth in the NCAA West First Round Championships performance list and is tied for 14th in the nation. Kafourou also competed in the high jump for the first time this season, placing seventh with a mark of 1.63m (5-4.25). 

Utah State's Erin Stratton was named the Verizon WAC Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week after she finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a career-best time of 10:24.08 at the Cal Brutus Hamilton Invitational in Berkeley, Calif. last weekend.

Other track nominees included: Boise State's Racquel Jones, Idaho's Lauren Schaffer, Louisiana Tech's Jesseka Jones and Nevada's Samantha Diaz. 

Other field nominees included: Fresno State's J'Quyra Moncor-Blue, Idaho's Mykael Bothum, Louisiana Tech's Phelecia Reynolds, Nevada's La Tijera Avery and Utah State's Sonia Grabowska.
