Bates Tabbed with Weekly Honor

April 22, 2014

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Redshirt junior Emma Bates has been named the Mountain West Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week for meets held April 15-21. The honor is Bates' first MW weekly accolade this outdoor season.

This past weekend Bates and a small portion of the track and field team traveled to Walnut, Calif. to compete in the Mt. SAC Relays. Bates competed in the 5,000m Elite Invitational race and placed fifth out of 29 competitors, most of which were professional runners. The only collegiate runner to finish ahead of Bates was the No. 3 nationally ranked Abbey D'Agostino from Dartmouth.

Bates' time of 15:33.42 broke the MW 5,000m all-time record, the school record and her previous career-best time. Bates is ranked No. 5 nationally and No. 1 in the MW in the 5,000m. With Bates' record-breaking performance, the women's track and field team catapulted 23 spots in the national rankings this week and now sits at No. 38.

Bates now holds school outdoor records in the 5,000m and 10,000m, and indoor records in the mile, 3,000m and 5,000m. Last year Bates was a NCAA First Team All-American in the 5,000m and 10,000m.

The Broncos are back in action this weekend when they travel to Provo, Utah to compete in the BYU Robison Invitational, April 23-26.
