Viitala Snags First MW Award of Outdoor Season

BOISE, Idaho -- Boise State senior Eetu Viitala has been as a Mountain West Co-Men's Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week, joining TCU junior Charles Silmon with the honor for the week of April 17, 2012.

Viitala, a product of Kuortane, Finland, competed in his first meet of 2012 earning first-place  honors in the men's long jump at the UTEP Invite last weekend in El Paso, Texas, posting a career-best mark of 25'-8.00" (7.82m) to claim the individual title. Viitala's leap ranks second in Mountain West history, second all-time at Boise State, and fifth in the NCAA during the 2012 outdoor season.

He becomes the first Bronco to earn a MW honor during the 2012 outdoor track and field season. Kurt Felix and Mele Vaisima earned two honors each during the 2012 indoor season.

Silmon, hailing from Waco, Texas, earned first-place finishes in the 100-meters, 200-meters and 4x100-meter relay last weekend at the Spec Towns Invite in Athens, Ga.

UNLV senior Amanda Bingson was named MW Women's Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week.
