Broncos Successful at UTEP Invite, EOU Open

EL PASO, Texas - The Boise State track and field team picked up four wins and 31 top-10 finishes at the UTEP Invitational on Saturday (April 14) at Kidd Field. The Broncos split over the weekend with a handful of the team at the Eastern Oregon Open as well. There they earned nine wins and 18 top-three finishes in LaGrande, Ore.

The Bronco men earned four wins at the UTEP Invitational, including wins by Dusty Klein in the 800-meters (1:56.39), Eetu Viitala in the long jump (25-8), good for an all-time top-three effort, and Kenny Roseman in the triple jump (47-6.50). Sasa Kampic earned the lone women's win for the Broncos, taking the javelin title (136-9). 

Joining Klein in the 800-meters was Matthew Moyer who earned a second-place finish in a time of 1:56.47. In the shorter distances, Manoah Wesson earned  a 10 th-place finish in the 100-meters (10.73), while Eric Capelle placed ninth in the 200-meters (22.73) and Jeff Daw placed ninth in the 400-meters (50.37). The Bronco men put together a fifth-place 4x100-meter relay team, clocking a time of 41.34. Rolando Trammel placed third in the 110-meter hurdles (14.30), while Justin Malnes came in just behind in fourth-place (14.62).

In the field events, Will Lohman added a third-place finish in the shot put (53-9.75), a third-place finish in the hammer throw (186=9) and a seventh-place finish in the discus (157-6). Chase Sexton placed fourth in the shot put (51-7) and in the discus (176-8), while Trevor Kraychir placed fourth in the hammer throw (183-9).

On the women's side the Broncos placed fourth in the 4x100-meter relay (45.72). Taryn Campos added a fourth-place finish in the 200-meters (24.61), while Mackenzie Flannigan added an eighth-place finish (24.78). Megan Kelley earned a ninth-place finish in the 400-meters (58.76), adding to the sprint corps efforts. Also on the track, Jessica Bottelberghe earned a second-place finish in the 800-meters (2:18.77), while Jamie Knapp placed third (2:19.53).

In the women's jumps Racquel Jones placed 10 th in the long jump (19-4), while Alexis Keyes and Debra Johnson tied for ninth-place in the triple jump (37-6). Joining Kampic in the javelin, Andrea Morones placed fifth (124-3). Mele Vaisima added a fourth-place finish in the discus (151-6) and a second-place finish in the hammer throw (198-11), good for No. 3 all-time at Boise State. Alyssa Osai placed fifth in the discus (144-1) and third in the hammer (193-0), rounding out the top-10 Bronco finishers at the UTEP Invitational.

EOU Open
The Broncos earned nine wins on the day at the EOU Open. The Bronco women earned seven of those wins, while the men earned two.

Shannon Jacobs won the 100-meters (12.39) and long jump (17-7), while Yvonne Bennett won the 200-meters (25.71) and Steffanie Jordan won the 400-meters (1:00.05). Kate Holman took the 100-meter hurdles title (15.72), while Megan Opatz won the 400-meter hurdles (1:08.52). Nadine Russell earned a win in the throws, picking up the hammer title (166-2).

Bennett also earned a third-place finish in the 100-meters (12.60), while Wilson and Alderman placed second (1:00.60) and third (1:02.19), respectively in the 400-meters. Marissa Opatz placed second in the 800-meters (2:17.30) and Mattie Stanford placed third in the 1500-meters (5:10.68) representing the middle distances.

In the field events, Michelle Glass placed second in the high jump (5-1), while Kady Stafford placed second in the hammer (157-3) and Kristen Sowers placed third in the javelin (128-5).

For the men, Anthony Belcher earned a win in the 200-meters (23.32), as well as placing second in the 60-meters (11.38). Kyler Osborne also earned a win for the men, picking up the javelin title with a throw of 177-9 to round out the top-three finishers at the EOU Open.

The Boise State track and field teams will prep for their next meets, the Mt. SAC Relays and Oregon Relays held in Walnut, Calif., and Eugene, Ore., respectively. The two meets are slated for April 19-21.
