Broncos Prepare For Sun Angel Track Classic

The Meet - The Boise State University track and field will travel to Tempe, Ariz., Apr. 11-12, to compete in the Sun Angel Track Classic at the Joe Sellah Track at Sun Angel Stadium.


The women’s and men’s hammer throws will be the only events on Friday, Apr. 11, beginning at 3:00 and 5:30 p.m., respectively. The rest of the field events will be held Saturday, Apr. 12, beginning at 10:00 a.m., with the women’s discus. All track events will be run Saturday, Apr. 12, beginning with the women’s 100m hurdles at 2:00 p.m., and concluding with women’s 5,000m at 9:52 p.m.


The Teams - The Sun Angel Track Classic will feature representatives from 32 universities around the country (both genders represented unless noted). The field includes Boise State, host Arizona State, Adams State, Air Force, Alabama (M), Arizona, Arkansas (M), Auburn, Central Arizona, Colorado State, Columbia (M), Coppin State (M), Dartmouth (M), DePaul, Duke, Florida, Florida Atlantic (W), Illinois (W), Iowa, Iowa State, Maryland-Eastern Shore, Michigan (W), Minnesota (M), Morgan State, New Mexico, Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado, Ohio State (M), Penn State, Rhode Island (W), Villanova (W), Washington and Wisconsin (M).


The Broncos- In its last competition, Apr. 4-5 at Boise, Idaho, the Boise State men’s track and field team finished second at the All Idaho Collegiate Cup with 171 points while the women’s team finished third with 138 points.


Five members of the team have already earned NCAA Regional qualifying standards.


Nick Cunningham clocked an NCAA Regional qualifying time of 21.24 in the men’s 200m as he won the event at the All Idaho Cup. He also won the 100m dash at the All Idaho Cup with a Western Athletic Conference-best and personal-best time of 10.63.


Jarrod Stevens earned his qualifying mark at the Northwest Nazarene Invitational with a toss of 212-10 (64.88m) in the hammer throw. Stevens has won the hammer toss at both the NNU Invitational and the All Idaho Cup this season.


Simon Wardhaugh also earned an NCAA Regional qualifying standard in the hammer throw with a toss of 196-6 (59.91m). At the All Idaho Cup, Wardhaugh finished first in the shot put and second in both the discus and hammer.


Zacharias Arnos earned his trip to the NCAA West Regional in Northridge, Calif., May 30-31, in the triple jump with a NCAA Regional qualifying standard of 50-3.25 (15.32m). Arnos finished fourth in the triple jump at the NCAA Western Regional during the 2007 outdoor season with a mark of 51-4.50 (15.66m).


Nate Putnam earned an NCAA qualifying standard in the men’s javelin with a toss of 212-1 (64.65m). His mark ranks his seventh in the west region and first in the WAC.
