Broncos Win Six Events on Day One of All Idaho Cup
BOISE, Idaho - The sun shined bright on the Boise State track and field team, Friday (March 1) afternoon, as the Broncos won six events at Ed Jacoby Track in Bronco Stadium to kick off the start of the two day 2011 All Idaho Cup.
The Boise State men and women each captured three individual titles on day one, while filling several top five finishes in multiple other events. The Bronco men started their day off with two wins on the track, including a dominating performance in the 200-meter dash.
Boise State placed first, third, fourth and fifth in the 200m, paced behind Manoah Wesson who won the event with a time of 21.69. He was followed in third by Karrie Butler (21.98). Dusty Klein crossed the finish line in fourth (22.24) while Paul Robertson finished fifth (22.32).
The Broncos would earn their other first-place finish on the track in the 400m hurdles as Rolando Trammel and Anthony Belcher captured the top two spots for Boise State. Trammel stopped the clock first with a time of 52.47. He was followed shortly after by Belcher, who set a personal best in the event with a time of 53.81.
Eetu Viitala secured the final individual title of the day for the Bronco men as he scored a win in the long jump on his final attempt of the evening. Viitala broke his career best mark by an inch and a half as he jumped 25-00.00 (7.62m) to edge out second-place by a mere three inches.
Boise State also saw multiple individuals enjoy top five finishes on the men's side, including placing third and fourth in the 1,500m. Brian Pierre topped his career personal record in the 1,500m by over three seconds as he ran to a third-place finish with a time of 3:56.93. He was followed closely by Drew O'Donoghue McDonald who placed fourth with a time of 3:57.38.
Daniel Thompson took home the final third-place finish for the Bronco men on Friday as he placed third (15-05.00/4.70m) in the pole vault.
The Boise State women were equally as impressive on day No. 1 as they scored two wins on the track and another in the field on Friday. Like the men, the Bronco women dominated the 200m dash, capturing the top five spots in the final standings. Mackenzie Flannigan led the way for Boise State as she won the 200m with a time of 24.95. She was followed by Cyntrail Pierce (24.96), Taryn Campos (25.01), Destiny Gammage (25.05) and Yvonne Bennett (25.61).
Emily Funkhouser would score the second individual track title of the day for Boise State as she won the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:02.81.
In the field events, the Bronco women asserted themselves in the long jump as they took the top three spots, which included a narrow win by Racquel Jones (18-09.25/5.72m). Jones managed to barely edge out teammate Shannon Jacobs, who finished second with a mark of 18-08.50 (5.70m). Alexi Morton rounded out the top three for Boise State with a jump of 17-11.75 (5.48m).
The Bronco women also enjoyed a successful day in the hammer throw, as Alyssa Osai and Nadine Russell narrowly finished second and third in the event, respectively. Osai placed second with a throw of 162-07 (49.57m). She was followed by Russell with a throw of 161-08 (49.29m).
Both the Boise State men and women will look to carry over their success from day one to Saturday (April 2) with the final day of events of the All Idaho Cup being held at Bronco Stadium. Field events are scheduled to start on Saturday at 10 a.m. with the men's hammer throw and the women's shot put. Running events, meanwhile, are scheduled to go from 1 p.m. to approximately 3:20 p.m.
