Track and Field Fares Well at ASU Team Invite

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Boise State track and field team opened up their 2010 outdoor season on Friday and Saturday at the 2010 Arizona State Team Invitational. Although the meet was a non-scored meet, the Broncos fared well against big schools such as Arizona State, Texas A&M, Duke, Wyoming, Purdue and Northern Arizona.

The Bronco men earned 14 finishes in the top-8 places over the meet, while the women earned 13 top-8 finishes on the weekend.

In the men's sprints, Eric Capelle earned a seventh-place finish in the 100-meter dash, clocking a time of 10.91-seconds. Rolando Trammel had a solid performance in the 400-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 54.57-seconds to place eighth. Capelle and Trammel were joined by Jeff Daw and Marlon Douglas to place seventh in the 4x100-meter relay in a time of 41.56-seconds.

In the longer distance races, Jeff Howard and Sawyer Bosch earned solid finishes in the 5,000-meter run, placing fourth and sixth, respectively. Howard clocked a time of 14-minutes, 39.15-seconds, while Bosch ran a time of 14-minutes, 43.34-seconds. In the 3,000-meter steeplechase Kevin Higgs placed fourth (9:31.98), Scott Foley placed sixth (9:43.00) and Zach Wiles placed seventh (9:43.57) to add to the distance corps strength.

The Bronco men fared well in the field events as well with Kurt Felix placing third in the high jump, clearing a height of 6-feet, 8.75-inches. In the long jump Zacharias Arnos (24-7.00) earned a second-place finish while Eetu Viitala (23-5.50) finished in seventh-place.  Arnos also earned a second-place finish (50-11.50) in the triple jump. Trevor Kraychir fared well in the hammer throw, earning fifth-place with a toss of 198-feet, 6-inches. Alex Nelson finished just behind with a toss of 196-feet, 4-inches, placing eighth in the hammer throw.

On the women's side, Joi Glass led in the sprinting events for the Broncos, placing sixth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:01.81). Emily Funkhouser finished eighth in the long hurdles, clocking a time of 1-minute, 2.34-seconds. In the 4x100-meter relay Destiny Gammage, Megan Olivetti, Taryn Campos and Racquel Jones clocked a time of 46.54-seconds to place sixth overall. Olivetti, Campos and Glass were joined by Paige Olivetti in the 4x400-meter relay for a fourth-place finish (3:50.24).

In the distance races, Piper Delaney (18:06.75) and Carly Gerard (18:26.11) earned top-8 finishes in the 5,000-meter run, placing fifth and eighth, respectively. Shea Hanson earned a third-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11-minutes, 27.14-seconds.

In the field events, BreAnna Craig captured a fifth-place finish in the pole vault, while Heidi Dorling finished in sixth-place, each clearing 11-feet, 8-inches. Jones earned an eighth-place finish in the long jump (18-4.50) while Ann Noyes earned an eighth-place finish in the triple jump (35-11.50). Mele Vaisima earned a fifth-place finish in the hammer throw (175-4) while Sasa Kampic threw her way to a fourth-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 155-feet, 3-inches.

The Broncos continue their season in one week when they host their first outdoor home meet of the season at Bronco Stadium. The All-Idaho Collegiate will be held on April 2 and 3 in the first of two home meets this season for Boise State.
