Nine Broncos Compete Well at ASU Invite

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Boise State track and field team sent a handful of team members to open their 2011 outdoor track and field season at the Arizona State Invitational on Saturday (March 26). Five Bronco men and four Bronco women competed well in their first outdoor meet of the season.

On the men's side Justin Malnes and Eetu Viitala ended the day with the top finishes for the Broncos. Malnes ran a time of 14.74-seconds in the 110-meter hurdles, placing third, while Viitala jumped 23-8.75 in the long jump also placing third. Malnes also earned a 33rd-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.25-seconds.

Rolando Trammel raced in the 400-meter hurdles, running a time of 53.16-seconds to place fifth, while Anthony Belcher also raced in the long hurdles, clocking a time of 55.48-seconds ( 14th-place). In the 100-meter dash, Belcher ran to a 26th-place finish in a time of 11.36-seconds.

In the field events, Joshua Butler picked up a ninth-place finish in the high jump, clearing 6-4.75, as well as earning ninth in the triple jump with a mark of 44-9.75.

For the women Racquel Jones placed well in both events, clocking a time of 25.05 in the 200-meter dash, placing eighth out of 37 competitors. Jones also placed 11th in the long jump, leaping a distance of 17-11.75.

In the 100-meter hurdles Tajanee Simmons led the Broncos, crossing the line at 15.19-seconds and placing 17th. Kate Holman also ran the short hurdles, clocking a time of 16.19-seconds to place 25th.  

Simmons and Holman also participated in the 400-meter hurdles placing 15th (1:05.53) and 17th (1:12.22), respectively. Emily Funkhouser also ran the long hurdles, leading the Broncos with an eighth-place finish and a time of 1:02.54.

The nine Broncos who competed this weekend will join their entire team next week, hosting the Idaho Cup on April 1-2 at Boise State's Bronco Stadium. The meet is slated for a 12-noon start on Friday, April 1. Saturday's (April 2) events are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
