BOISE, Idaho - Boise State's Emma Bates is set to compete at the 2014 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships held this weekend in Albuquerque, N.M. The meet will be held Friday-Saturday, March 14-15 at the Albuquerque Convention Center and will be hosted by the University of New Mexico.

The senior will represent the Broncos in the 5000-meters Friday evening at 8:45 p.m. (MT) followed by the 3000-meters Saturday at 7:55 p.m. (MT). Bates becomes the first Bronco to compete in that event combination at a national championship, while also becoming the second Bronco female to compete in multiple events at an NCAA Track and Field Championship (indoor or outdoor). Eleni Kafourou is the only other Bronco female to do so, doubling in the indoor long jump and triple jump (2008 and 2009), as well as the outdoor long jump and triple jump (2007 and 2008).

A five-time All-American, Bates enters the meet as the third-most decorated Bronco track and field team member ever, following only Ryan Grinnell (2008-2009) and Jarred Rome (1997-2000) who each earned six All-American honors during their careers.

Bates will look to better her 14th-place finish in the 5000-meters at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships where she earned a USTFCCCA Second Team All-America nod. The Elk River, Minn., native, currently ranks fifth in the 3000-meters and ninth in the 5000-meters, according to the declared participants list on, and will look to earn her first indoor track and field USTFCCCA First Team All-American nod (placing first through eighth) this coming weekend (9th-16th is second team).
