Bronco Invitational on the Horizon

The Meet - The Boise State University track and field team will host the Bronco Invitational Feb. 8-9, at the Idaho Sports Center in Nampa, Idaho.


The meet will start Friday Feb. 8, 2008, beginning with the field events at 5:30 p.m., followed by the track events at 6:00 p.m. The two-day competition will continue Saturday, Feb. 9, with the field events starting at 10:00 a.m. A complete list of times and events are below.


The Teams - The Boise State women’s track and field team will host Arizona State, Nevada, Northwest, Cal State - Stanislaus, San Diego State, College of Idaho, San Francisco State, Utah State and Eastern Oregon.


The men’s field will consist of Boise State, Arizona State, College of Idaho, Utah State, Eastern Oregon, Northwest Nazarene and Treasure Valley CC.


The Bronco Men - The Boise State University men’s track and field team is ranked sixth in Division I indoor track and field according to, with 80.06 points. The men’s track and field team achieved this ranking by having six different members place in the top 16 on the NCAA performance list.


Ryan Grinnell leads the Broncos and the nation in the triple jump with an NCAA-best 53-9.50 (16.40m). Grinnell’s jump is an NCAA automatic qualifying standard and an Olympic qualify mark. He first achieved the standard at the Blue and Orange Classic, Jan. 26, before improving upon his mark at the United Heritage Invitational Feb. 2. Grinnell is also ranked 10th in the high jump clearing a height of 7-0.50 (2.15m) and 11th in the long jump with a mark of 25-1 (7.65m).


Savvas Diakonikolas is the fifth ranked long jumper in the nation with a distance of 25-7.75 (7.82m) which he achieved Feb. 1, at the United Heritage Invitational. He is just .75 inches (.02m) behind second place. Diakonikolas is also ranked in the triple jump, coming in at No. 12 with a mark of 50-11 (15.52m).


Simon Wardhaugh is ranked sixth in the weight throw with a distance of 69-7 (21.21m). The mark is an NCAA provisional standard and less than a foot (11.50/.29m) off the NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 21.50m.


Heigo Nurmsalu is ranked for the first time this week, coming in at No. 9 in the heptathlon standings. Nurmsalu posted 5,332 points in the heptathlon at the United Heritage Classic Feb. 1-2, to earn the NCAA provisional qualifying standard.


Jarrod Stevens is ranked for the first time this season after posting a lifetime-best mark of 68-8.75 (20.34m) in the weight throw at the United Heritage Classic. The mark is an NCAA provisional qualifying standard and ranks him 11th in the weight throw in Division I.


Zacharias Arnos is the ranked 16th in the triple jump with a mark of 50-7.25 (15.43m). His distance is an NCAA provisional qualifying standard and would project to 1.54 points at nationals.


The Bronco men dropped two spots in this week’s poll (Feb. 6) despite losing only .4 points. Rankings are determined by the team’s projected points at the NCAA National Championships.


The Bronco Women - The Boise State University women’s track and field is ranked 48th, according to the USTFCCCA, with 16.18 points. The Broncos are the number two ranked team in the WAC one spot behind Hawaii (19.10 points). Boise State moved up 15 places to No. 48, thanks in large part to Eleni Kafourou.


Kafourou is ranked sixth in the NCAA in the triple jump with a mark of 43-0 (13.64m) and 14th in the long jump with a distance of 20-3.50 (6.19m). Both jumps are NCAA provisional qualifying standards.


Annelise Bertleson achieved a school-record 12-7.5 (3.85m) in the pole vault Feb. 1, at the United Heritage Classic.
