MEN?S THROWING EVENTS HIGHLIGHT THIS SATURDAY?S (Feb. 3) UNITED HERITAGE TRACK AND FIELD INVITATIONAL

            BOISE, Idaho The men’s shot put and 35-pound weight throw highlight the track and field schedule of events this Saturday (Feb. 3) at the Jacksons Indoor Track in Nampa, as Boise State University hosts the United Heritage Invitational.

            Several teams from around the northwest and California will join the Bronco men and women’s teams.  Prior to a full slate of final events on Saturday, there will be several preliminary heats in the shorter running events on Friday (Feb. 2) along with finals in the distance medley relays.  Friday’s events start at 7:00 p.m.  Saturday’s field events start at 9:30 a.m. with the women’s high jump, while the running events begin at Noon with the finals of the men’s 60-meter hurdles.

            Six-time NCAA All-American and former Bronco Jarred Rome leads the field in the shot put which begins at 10:30 a.m.  A member of the 2004 United States Olympic team in the discus, Rome will be making his second straight appearance in Nampa this weekend.  At last week’s Bronco Indoor Invitational, the 2004 Olympic Trails discus champion won the shot put with a mark of 60-0.50 (18.30m).  Last year Rome’s top shot put was 66-11.25 (20.40m), a personal best. 

            During the 2006 season, Rome placed third in the discus at the USA Outdoor Championships, and finished the year ranked No. 9 in the world, and No. 2 in the United States, in the discus.  Rome earned his six All-American awards from 1997 to 2000 while competing for the Broncos.

            A future Bronco highlights the men’s 35-pound weight throw on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.  Trevor Kraychir of Twentynine Palms High School in California is one of the top ranked high school throwers in the nation and signed a national letter of intent with Boise State this past November.  While Kraychir is in his senior season at Twentynine Palms, he will be competing in the collegiate open division this Saturday. 

            On Jan. 20 (Saturday) of this year, Kraychir competed in the open division of the 35-pound weight throw (which is the college weight) at a meet in California and produced the fourth best all-time high school mark in the 35-pound throw at 60-11 (18.57m).  Kraychir throws a 25-pound weight during high school events.

            Leading Boise State in both throwing events this Saturday will be Erik Whitsett and Simon Wardhaugh.  Whitsett has the Broncos’ top shot put mark this year at 56-9.25 (17.30m), which is also the second best mark in the WAC this season.  Wardhaugh has Boise State’s top weight throw this year at 63-11.50 (19.49m).  His throw is also the second best league mark this year. 

            Highlighting the women’s schedule this weekend will be will be 2006 WAC Indoor triple jump champion Eleni Kafourou.  The Bronco sophomore currently leads the conference in the long jump with a season best mark of 19-9.75 (6.04m), and has the second best triple jump at 42-1.75 (12.85m).  Her triple jump is just one-half inch short of the Boise State record of 42-2.25 set by Abigail Ferguson in 1996.

            The Jacksons Indoor Track is located next to the Idaho Center in Nampa.
