Boise State Hosts Bronco Classic February 4

► WHAT'S HAPPENING - The Boise State track and field teams host a lower key meet this week, the Bronco Classic, on Saturday, Feb. 4. Although it is a low key, one-day meet, the Broncos welcome some big name teams like UCLA, Washington, Utah State, Nevada and Fresno State to the Jacksons Indoor Track.

This is the penultimate of six regular-season home meets held at the venue this season, followed by the 2012 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships which are slated for March 9-10 at the Jacksons Indoor Track.  

► LOOKING AT THE OPPONENTS - The Bronco Classic welcomes 15 teams to the Jacksons Indoor Track at the Idaho Center. Washington holds the highest rankings this week, sitting at No. 28 for the women and No. 42 for the men. UCLA ranks No. 65 for the men and No. 68 for the women, while Boise State ranks No. 72 for the men and 119 for the women. Utah State's women are the only other NCAA Division I competitor in this meet with a ranking, sitting a t No. 70.

Northwest Nazarene and Montana State Billings have ranked women's teams in the Division II category, sitting at No. 85 and No. 89, respectively.

The Broncos also welcome the Academy of Art, Cal State LA, Treasure Valley Community College, Southern Oregon, Lewis-Clark, College of Idaho, Eastern Oregon and George Fox to the meet.

► MEET SPECIFICS - The Bronco Classic is a one-day meet, slated for a 9:00 a.m. start with the women's high jump on Saturday, Feb. 4. The mixed 800-meter run will be the first event on the track, starting at 10:10 a.m., while the final event of the day, the women's 4x400-meter relay is scheduled for 4:10 p.m.

► TICKETS - Ticket prices for the 2012 regular season track meets are $5 for adults and $3 for seniors/students.

Tickets for the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 9-10, 2012 are also for sale during the regular season meets in the ticket box. Prices for all-session passes are: $50 for Adult Reserved; $45 for Adult General Admission; $37 for Senior/Student Reserved and $30 for Senior/Student General Admission.

► RANKINGS WATCH - The 2012 USTFCCCA Division I National Team Computer Rankings released the second week of rankings on Tuesday (Jan. 31), keeping Arkansas as the top men's team this week and leaving Oregon as the top women's team from last week and the preseason rankings.

Boise State's men sit at the No. 72 spot in the USTFCCCA weekly rankings with three Broncos ranking in four events. The women move to the No. 119 spot in the national team rankings this week. In the USTFCCCA rankings, Kurt Felix is ranked No. 13 in the heptathlon and No. 24 in the high jump, Eetu Viitala is ranked No. 14 in the long jump and Trevor Kraychir is ranked No. 17 in the weight throw. For the women Mele Vaisima ranks No. 29 in the weight throw and Alexi Morton ranks No. 33 in the pentathlon.

In the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFFRS) rankings, Kraychir ranks No. 18 in the men's weight throw, while Vaisima ranks No. 23 in the women's weight throw, the only two top-50 rankings this week for the Broncos.

The TFFRS rankings are based only on 2012 results, whereas the USTFCCCA rankings take into account the final 2011 rankings of some athletes.

► HONOR ROLL - Bronco senior Mele Vaisima has earned the only Mountain West honor so far this season, being named the Mountain West Athlete of the Week (Dec. 13, 2011) for her win and career-best toss in the weight throw at the Jacksons Open

► LAST TIME OUT - In their fourth meet of the season, the Jacksons Invitational, the Broncos picked up nine event titles in the one-day meet.

The Bronco men led the way with wins in the 60-meters (Eric Capelle), the 400-meters (Manoah Wesson), the 800-meters (Andy Robertson), the 3000-meters (Jeff Howard), the triple jump (Kenny Roseman), the shot put (Will Lohman) and the weight throw (Trevor Kraychir). The women earned wins in the weight throw (Mele Vaisima) and the distance medley relay (Kate Jette, Jamie Knapp, Anna Preciado and Shea Hanson,

► WINNING STREAKS - Broncos Mele Vaisima and Trevor Kraychir lead the team with four wins apiece in as many meets in the weight throw. They are joined this week by Manoah Wesson with multiple wins on the season. Wesson has run the 400-meters twice this season, winning both times and remaining undefeated in the event.

► INDOOR SLATE - Boise State is hosting its fifth of six regular-season indoor home meets on Saturday, Feb. 4. The Broncos' indoor regular-season schedule is anchored by the Boise State Team Challenge (Feb. 10-11). The university and Jacksons Indoor Track also host the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field National Championship meet, March 9-10.
