Broncos Welcome 600+ Athletes to Jacksons Invite

► WHAT'S HAPPENING - The Boise State track and field teams are set to host the Jacksons Invitational/New Balance West meet this weekend (Jan. 27-28), welcoming over 500 student-athletes to the Jacksons Indoor Track at the Idaho Center.  

This is the fourth of six regular-season home meets held at the venue this season, followed by the 2012 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships which are slated for March 9-10 at the Jacksons Indoor Track.  

► TOUGH OPPONENTS - The Jacksons Invitational is one of the Broncos' biggest regular-season meets this season, hosting over 500 athletes in the college and high school divisions.

The Broncos (#49 men; #109 women) welcome top collegiate opponents in Georgia (#23 men; #13 women), Idaho State (#94 men), Utah (#56 women), Utah State (#65 women), Weber State (#121 women), Fresno State, Cal State Northridge, Texas-Arlington, UC Santa Barbara, Eastern Oregon, Western Washington, College of Idaho, Cal State L.A., Northwest Nazarene, Treasure Valley Community College, Westminster (Utah) and Linfield.

Club teams include Baker Running Club, Summit Track Club, Greater Boise Running Club, SE PDX Track Club, R.A.W. Speed Club, Boise State Track and Field Club and the Boise River Running Club.

The New Balance West portion of the meet is the high school sections that will be mixed throughout the collegiate competition schedule.

► MEET SPECIFICS - The Jacksons Invitational includes both multi-event and individual event competitions over the Friday-Saturday timeline (Jan. 27-28). The women's pentathlon kicks-off the weekend's festivities, beginning with the pentathlon 60-meter hurdles at 10:30 a.m. on Friday. The men's heptathlon begins with the 60-meter dash at 11:00 a.m. on Friday. Open events begin at 4:00 p.m. on Friday with the women's 3000-meter run, men's weight throw and women's pole vault.

Saturday's collegiate events begin at 9:00 a.m. with the men's high jump and the men's heptathlon 60-meter hurdles. Saturday's final collegiate event begins at 4:00 p.m. with the men's 4x400-meter relay.

► TICKETS - Ticket prices for the 2012 regular season track meets are $5 for adults and $3 for seniors/students.

Tickets for the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 9-10, 2012 are also for sale during the regular season meets in the ticket box. Prices for all-session passes are: $50 for Adult Reserved; $45 for Adult General Admission; $37 for Senior/Student Reserved and $30 for Senior/Student General Admission.

► RANKINGS WATCH - The 2012 USTFCCCA Division I National Team Computer Rankings released the first week of rankings on Tuesday (Jan. 24), naming Arkansas as the top men's team this week and leaving Oregon as the top women's team from the preseason rankings.

Boise State's men sit at the No. 49 spot in the USTFCCCA weekly rankings with three Broncos ranking in four events. Kurt Felix sits at No. 8 in the heptathlon and No. 22 in the high jump while Eetu Viitala is at No. 13 in the long jump and Trevor Kraychir sits at No. 16 in the weight throw.

The Bronco women hold a No. 109 spot with Mele Vaisima sitting at No. 24 in the weight throw and Alexi Morton at No. 25 in the pentathlon.

In the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFFRS) rankings, Kraychir ranks No. 14, while Vaisima ranks No. 13. The Boise State men's 4x400-meter relay, made up of Karrie Butler, Jeff Daw, Paul Robertson and Bret Scheve, also sit at the No. 49 spot. The TFFRS rankings are based only on 2012 results, whereas the USTFCCCA rankings take into account the final 2011 rankings of some athletes.

► HONOR ROLL - Bronco senior Mele Vaisima has earned the only Mountain West honor so far this season, being named the Mountain West Athlete of the Week (Dec. 13, 2011) for her win and career-best toss in the weight throw at the Jacksons Open

► LAST TIME OUT - In their third meet of the season, the Bronco Invitational, the Broncos picked up seven event titles in the one-day meet.

The Bronco women earned four wins with Mele Vaisima capturing the weight throw title, Rici Morrill earning the 800-meter title, Emma Bates capturing the 3000-meter win and Alexi Morton winning the high jump.  

On the men's side Trevor Kraychir won the weight throw, Manoah Wesson won the 400-meters and the 4x400-meter relay (Wesson, Karrie Butler, Jeff Daw, Rolando Trammel) earned a title.  

► WINNING STREAKS - Broncos Mele Vaisima and Trevor Kraychir lead the team with three wins apiece in as many meets in the weight throw. They are the only two team members with more than one win in their respective events this season.

► INDOOR SLATE - Boise State is hosting its fourth of six regular-season indoor home meets on Friday and Saturday. The Broncos' schedule also includes the Bronco Classic (Feb. 4) and Boise State Team Challenge (Feb. 10-11). The university and Jacksons Indoor Track also host the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field National Championship meet, March 9-10.
