“The ability to bring in teams like Arizona, Stanford, California, etc., week in and week out gives our student-athletes the opportunity to compete against some of the best intercollegiate track and field teams in the country,” head coach Mike Maynard said. “The opportunity to provide this level of competition for our student-athletes, the community and the fans is very gratifying.”

The Players - Three Boise State student-athletes, Ryan Grinnell, Simon Wardhaugh and Eleni Kafourou, earned NCAA provisional qualifying standards in the season’s opening meet.

Grinnell earned provisional qualifying marks in the high jump (7-6.00/2.15m) and the triple jump (51-3.25/15.64m) in his first competition as a member of Boise State.

Wardhaugh registered a 69-5.50 (21.17m) in the 35-pound weight throw to earn the NCAA provisional standard. Last season, Wardhaugh finished 11th in the hammer at the 2007 NCAA Outdoor National Track and Field Championships with a throw of 208-2 (63.45m). His best performance of the season in the hammer throw came at Boise State Twilight Classic where he registered a 219-6 (66.9m).

Kafourou earned her NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the triple jump at the Jacksons Open with a mark of 41-11.25 (12.78m). During the 2007 season, Kafourou participated in the triple jump at the NCAA Outdoor National Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif. Throughout the 2007 season, Kafourou captured numerous first place finishes in the long and triple jumps including winning both at the Boise State Twilight Classic. Kafourou is also the Boise State school-record holder in the long and triple jumps for both indoor and outdoor.

The Broncos also feature NCAA National Outdoor qualifier Zacharias Arnos. Arnos earned an automatic bid to the 2007 NCAA Outdoor National Track and Field Championships in the triple jump after posting a fourth place finish at the NCAA West Region Championships with a mark of 51-4.50 (15.66m). He also captured the individual title at the Boise State Twilight Classic when he recorded a 15.46M (50-08.75) in the triple jump.

“This is really our first opportunity to see where our team’s strengthens are and the areas in which we need to improve,” Maynard said. “This meet will provide many of our student-athletes with their first opportunity of the season to earn NCAA indoor provisional qualifying standards.”
