Boise State Host Big Competition at Bronco Invite

► WHAT'S HAPPENING - Boise State track and field is set to host its third meet of the 2011-12 season, the Bronco Invitational, on Saturday, Jan. 21 at the Jacksons Indoor Track at the Idaho Center in Nampa.

This is the third of six regular-season home meets held at the venue this season, followed by the 2012 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships which are slated for March 9-10 at the Jacksons Indoor Track.

► MORE BIG NAME COMPETITION - The Bronco Invitational will be another big meet with top competition from around the West. Boise State, whose men sit at No. 45 and women No. 106 in the USTFCCCA Division I National rankings, will host Stanford (#7 men; #23 women), Idaho (#50 women), Sacramento State (#109 men; #85 women), Utah State (#67 women), Northwest Nazarene (#85 women Division II), San Diego State (women only), Nevada (women only), Utah Valley, UC Riverside, College of Idaho, Treasure Valley Community College, UC Irvine and Westminster (Utah).

Club teams include Bowerman Athletic Club, R.A.W. Speed Club, Boise State Track and Field Club and the Boise River Running Club.

► MEET SPECIFICS - The Bronco Invitational is a one-day meet beginning at 9:00 a.m. with the women's high jump and men's pole vault.  Running events begin at 10:00 a.m. with the mixed 800-meter run and are scheduled to finish at 3:55 p.m. with the mixed 400-meter dash. Collegiate running evens start at 10:30 a.m. with the men's 60-meter hurdles, while the women's 4x400-meter relay will anchor the day at 3:40 p.m.

► TICKETS - Ticket prices for the 2012 regular season track meets are $5 for adults and $3 for seniors/students.

Tickets for the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 9-10, 2012 are also for sale during the regular season meets in the ticket box. Prices for all-session passes are: $50 for Adult Reserved; $45 for Adult General Admission; $37 for Senior/Student Reserved and $30 for Senior/Student General Admission.

► RANKINGS WATCH - The 2012 USTFCCCA Division I National Team Computer Rankings released the preseason poll on Tuesday (Jan. 10), naming Florida as the top men's team and Oregon leading the women's race.

Boise State's men sit at the No. 45 spot in the full preseason list with three Broncos ranking in four events. Kurt Felix sits at No. 8 in the heptathlon and No. 18 in the high jump preseason rankings. Eetu Viitala is at No. 12 in the long jump, while Trevor Kraychir sits at No. 13 in the weight throw.

The Bronco women hold a No. 106 spot in the preseason rankings, with Mele Vaisima sitting at No. 22 in the weight throw and Alexi Morton at No. 24 in the pentathlon.

► HONOR ROLL - After two weeks of Mountain West Athlete of the Week honors, Bronco senior Mele Vaisima was named the Mountain West Athlete of the Week (Dec. 13, 2011) for her win and career-best toss in the weight throw at the Jacksons Open

► LAST TIME OUT - In their second meet of the season, the Blue and Orange Opener, the Broncos picked up five event titles in the one-day meet against powerhouse teams such as Oregon, BYU and UTEP.

The Bronco women earned three wins with Mele Vaisima capturing the weight throw title (64-5), Megan Kelley earning the 400-meter crown (58.07) and Mackenzie Flannigan taking home the 300-meter title (39.8).

On the men's side Trevor Kraychir won the weight throw (64-11.5), while Kurt Felix won the high jump (6-10.25).

► WINNING STREAKS - Broncos Mele Vaisima and Trevor Kraychir lead the team with two wins apiece in the weight throw. They are the only two team members with more than one win in their respective events this season.

► INDOOR SLATE - Boise State is hosting its third of six regular-season indoor home meets on Saturday. The Broncos' schedule also includes the Jacksons Invitational (Jan. 27-28), Bronco Classic (Feb. 4) and Boise State Team Challenge (Feb. 10-11). The university and Jacksons Indoor Track also host the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field National Championship meet, March 9-10.
