Bates Runs Top Time on Day One of Season Opener

NAMPA, Idaho - The Boise State track and field team started its 2012-13 season off on the right foot Friday night in the first day of the Jacksons Open and Multi. The Broncos picked up three event wins out of the six they competed in at the Jacksons Indoor Track Complex at the Idaho Center.

Emma Bates led the way by winning the women's Mile in a career-best time of 4:49.20, also marking the second-fastest time in school history. Manoah Wesson collected a win in the 500-meters, clocking a time of 1:05.91, while Justin Malnes picked up a 60-meter hurdle open title in 8.13-seconds.

Joining Malnes in the hurdles was Rex Stanley, placing fourth in 8.85-seconds, and brother Jeremy Malnes, placing fifth in 8.88-seconds. Bret Scheve was the final Bronco to earn a mark for the men's team, tying for 11th in the 60-meter open with a career-best time of 7.19-seconds.

Seven Bronco women raced in the 60-meter open with three collecting career-best times. Shannon Jacobs was one of those three Broncos, running a career-best of 7.73-seconds to place 10th. Destiny Gammage tied for 13th-place running 7.77-seconds, while Mackenzie Flannigan ran a career-best of 7.78 to place 15th. Steffanie Joradan was close behind in a career-best of 7.82-seconds to place 16th while newcomer Chelsey Washington placed 19th (8.00). Yvonne Bennett collected a 22nd-place finish (8.09) and Yvette Bennett placed 27th (8.22) to round out the competing Broncos.

The Jacksons Open and Multis continues Saturday (Dec. 1) at the Jacksons Indoor Track. The meet is the first of six regular-season home meets for Boise State. Saturday's events begin at 9:00 a.m. with the men's heptathlon 60-meter hurdles. Field events are slated for a 9:45 a.m. start (men's weight throw), while the running events begin at 10:45 a.m. (women's 5000-meters).
