Fayetteville, Ark. - Emma Bates took second in the 10,000m and earned Boise State’s only NCAA National Championship berth of the day with a 34:06.99. Bates shaved close to a second off her fifth-place performance at last year’s West Preliminary 10,000m race (35:01.18).

Bates ran an exceptional race and hovered in the lead pack from start to finish. She methodically made her way from eighth to second place in the final five laps and quickly separated herself along with the eventual winner, Katy Moen from Iowa State. Moen and Bates were even for the first 200 meters of the final lap until Moen kicked it into another gear on the last turn.

Bates did not pursue the sprinting Moen and maintained her steady pace into the finish line. She will run the 5,000m on Saturday at 8:45 p.m. (CT) and attempt to qualify for nationals in two races for the second-consecutive year.

Fernando Martinez and Rex Stanley began the day for the Broncos in the 400m hurdles. Martinez took 40th with a time of 52.95 and Stanley placed 47th after crossing the line in 54.24. Despite not qualifying for tomorrow’s finals, Martinez still walks away from the season with the second-best 400m hurdles time in school history (50.44).

Austin Hamilton came into today’s competition ranked No. 19 in the West Region for javelin. The junior from Chehalis, Wash., jumped two spots and finished 17th with a throw of 206-11 (63.06m), an improvement on his 205-9 (62.71m) that he threw two weeks ago at the MW Outdoor Championships.

Hayli Bozarth placed 29th in the shot put with a throw of 48-10 (14.88m) and Jeff Howard took 41st in the 10,000m (32:28.27). Both Bozarth and Howard etched their names in the Bronco record book throughout the season: Bozarth set school records in the shot put (52-6) and the hammer (212-7), and Howard ran the third-fastest 10,000m time in school history (29:28.78). Bozarth will compete in the hammer on Saturday at 10 a.m. (CT).

The MW Outdoor Hammer Throw Champion, Matt Post, will lead off tomorrow for the Broncos at 10 a.m. (CT). Jasmyn Jewett will compete in the triple jump at 5 p.m.; Allan Schroeder and Zach Wiles will run in the 3,000m steeplechase at 8:50 p.m.; and Marisa Howard will close out the evening in the 3,000m steeplechase at 9:30 p.m.
