AUSTIN, Texas – Three Broncos earned national qualifying spots Saturday (May 25) in the third and final day of the 2013 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Championships at Texas’ Mike A. Myers Stadium. Emma Bates qualified in her second event of the weekend, while Matt Post and Daveon Collins each earned spots to their first national championship meet.

Marisa VanderMalle, who qualified late Friday in the steeplechase, joins Saturday’s trio of qualifiers, making for four total Broncos (in five events) to qualify for the national championships, June 5-8, in Eugene, Ore.

Bates raced to a second-place finish in her 5000-meter semifinal heat, good for fourth overall to qualify in her second event over the weekend. Her time of 16:04.03 was a school record, besting her own record of 16:16.74 set in 2012. The sophomore also earned a top-12 qualifying spot in the 10000-meters late Thursday.

Post earned his first trip to the national championships after waiting nearly a full day to compete. The junior was slated to compete in the hammer throw Friday afternoon, but the competition was pushed to Saturday mid-day after a long lightning and thunderstorm delay Friday. Post placed 10th with his final throw of 208’-11” (63.68m), earning him a qualifying spot for the national championships.

Collins was the final Bronco to earn a qualifying spot Saturday, racing to a 10th-place finish in the 200-meter quarterfinals. The junior raced to a time of 20.87-seconds, good for fourth in his heat. He was later joined by Jeff Daw, Bret Scheve and Jordin Andrade in the 4x400-meter relay, placing 18th in a time of 3:10.97. The relay will not advance to the national championship.

Junior Zach Wiles was also delayed Friday evening due to the storms, running his 3000-meter steeplechase race well into the early morning hours Saturday. The junior placed 42nd in a time of 9:15.62.

Saturday’s action was the final competition of the season for a handful of athletes, including Mackenzie Flannigan who placed 24th in the 200-meter quarterfinals with a time of 24.52-seconds. Flannigan was joined by Shannon Jacobs, Destiny Gammage and Heather Pilcher to run the 21st-fastest 4x100-meter relay in 45.91-seconds.

Tessa Murray also raced in the 5000-meters with Bates, placing 32nd in a time of 16:56.16, while David Elliott raced in the men’s 5000-meters in 14:34.54, placing 28th.

Austin Hamilton was the final Bronco to compete Saturday, placing 42nd in the javelin. Hamilton took only his first throw, earning a mark of 187’-0” (57.01m) before passing his final two throws.

Bates, Collins, Post and VanderMalle will prep to compete in the 2013 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field National Championships, June 5-8, at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field.
