Townsend Begins Strong at the MW Championships

Day One Results

LARAMIE, Wyo. – After day one of the Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships Roderick Townsend sits in second place of the decathlon with a point total of 3,686. Townsend only trails New Mexico’s Richard York (3,798). Boise State’s Danny Verdieck is in eighth place with a 3,040.

Townsend began the day with a fourth-place finish in the 100m (11.35) and a third-place finish in the long jump (22-3.75 / 6.80m).

He began to heat up in the middle of the day with a second-place finish in the shot put (39-7.75 / 12.08m). Townsend improved on that finish with a sound victory in the high jump after he cleared 6-9 (2.06m). His closest competitor only cleared 6-6.75, giving Townsend his highest point-earning event of the day (859).

Townsend wrapped up the day with a fourth-place finish in the 400m (53.39). Verdieck’s best finish of the day was sixth place in the long jump (22-5.75 / 6.24m).

Townsend and Verdieck will hit the track tomorrow at noon for the 110m hurdles. The discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500m will follow.
