Bates Shatters Own School Record, Likely Earns NCAA Bid

SEATTLE - Two Broncos traveled to Seattle to compete in the UW Final Qualifier at the Dempsey Indoor Track, Friday, March 1. Emma Bates and Heather Pilcher made the trip, competing in the 5000-meters and long jump, respectively.

Bates competed in her first 5000-meter race of the season, hoping to earn an NCAA National qualifying mark in the process. The sophomore couldn't have asked for a much better race, winning in a lifetime-best of 15:50.78. The time shatters her former school record of 16:44.06 set in 2012 and moves her to seventh in the NCAA rankings. Her time will need to stay in the top-16 through the end of the weekend to secure her spot at the NCAA National Championships held in Fayetteville, Ark., March 8-9.

Pilcher made the trip in hopes of improving her indoor-best mark of 19'-6" in the long jump. She was unable to do so, jumping a best of 18'-5.75" (5.63m), good for second-place in the long jump.

One final Bronco will compete this weekend in hopes of earning a qualifying spot to the national championships. Chase Sexton will throw the shot put at the Iowa State Qualifier on Saturday, March 2, in Ames, Iowa. Sexton's event is slated to start at 1:30 p.m. MST.
