Boise State Names New Director of Athletics

BOISE, Idaho -- Boise State University President Bob Kustra today announced that Mark Coyle has been named the new director of athletics for Bronco sports. Coyle is expected to officially begin his duties in early January, pending State Board of Education approval.

"Mark brings senior-level experience from two nationally-recognized programs, and we believe he is the ideal choice for this important position at Boise State," Kustra said. "Mark is a rising star in this profession. He will bring best practices from his school and conference experience, both Big 10 and Southeastern, to the business of running an athletic department in these very complicated times."

Coyle comes to Boise from the University of Kentucky, where he has been the deputy director of athletics since September 2010 and previously the senior associate athletics director for external affairs since 2005. He worked at the University of Minnesota from 2001-05 as an associate athletics director for external relations. He has also served in various capacities at the University of Miami (1993-94) and Florida State University (1992-93).

"Intercollegiate athletics is a key component of the campus community, and I understand the importance of how an athletics department represents its university," Coyle said. "I am privileged and deeply honored to lead this outstanding group of student-athletes and staff, and I believe Boise State is poised for future excellence and success."

At Kentucky, Coyle has been responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of a 22-sport, $83 million athletics department budget. In particular, he has significantly grown the fundraising efforts for athletic scholarships, annual giving and major capitol projects, successfully raising more than $135 million. He has been the sport administrator for multiple teams, including the showcase men's basketball program, while overseeing the scheduling and staff hiring.

"I'm incredibly excited for Mark and his family," Kentucky athletics director Mitch Barnhart said.  "Mark has been a great asset to the University of Kentucky over the last seven years and I'm happy that he's getting this opportunity.  The work he's done in terms of facilities and donor relationships has been tremendous.  Boise State made a great choice and he'll be missed by the Wildcat family.  Mark is ready and capable to lead a Division I progream.  We wish him, Krystan, Grace, Nicholas and Benjamin nothing but the best."

At Minnesota, Coyle managed the marketing and sales unit, athletics communications, ticket office, licensing and department website. He implemented marketing strategies aimed at increasing ticket sales, donations, merchandise sales and awareness for the department's 25 sport programs.

Coyle's background also includes work at Host Communications from 1997-2001 in Lexington, Ky., where he was promoted to Vice President, Collegiate Sports Division. He was responsible for overseeing staff management, including sales and marketing, production, creative services and the distribution of multi-media projects for several universities and conferences.

Coyle holds a bachelor's degree in English and a master's in education from Drake University. He also earned a master's degree in sports administration at Florida State.

Coyle, 43, and his wife, Krystan, have three children, Grace (9), Nicholas (8) and Benjamin (4).
