Curt Apsey Named Interim Athletic Director

Boise State University officials announced two staff appointments today.

Curt Apsey, a senior associate athletic director and a 12-year veteran of the Boise State Department of Athletics, has been named its interim athletic director, beginning Sept. 9.

John Cunningham, an assistant athletic director for compliance at Texas Christian University (TCU), has been selected as the executive director for NCAA compliance.

"Curt will provide a steady hand in leading our athletic department into its inaugural Mountain West season," said Bob Kustra, Boise State president. "His familiarity and experience with the daily management of the department will keep us moving forward in all areas."

Boise State will conduct a national search for a permanent athletic director to oversee the 19-sport department.  To optimize the scope and effectiveness of the national search, and to ensure an open field of high quality applicants, Apsey will not be a candidate for the position.

"I am honored and privileged that President Kustra has asked me to step into this role," Apsey said. "I look forward to working with Dr. Kustra, our student-athletes, coaches and staff during the transition.  We welcome the challenges and opportunities that our new conference affiliation brings, and anticipate great success for all of our programs in the upcoming season."

Apsey's most recent responsibilities have included oversight of external development such as media relations/sports information, marketing/promotions and Bronco Sports Properties, television and radio rights, Stueckle Sky Center, corporate sales, and the athletic ticket office.  He also administered several sports and helped to coordinate the long-range strategic plan for athletics.

He has been instrumental in fundraising efforts for the "Initiative for Athletic Excellence" capital campaign, including the Caven-Williams Indoor Sports Complex, Stueckle Sky Center at Bronco Stadium and the recently completed Arguinchona Basketball Complex.

Apsey previously served as assistant director of athletics at CSU San Bernardino and assistant director of development at CSU Bakersfield. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1988 from Cal Poly, where he was a four-year starter and career scoring leader for the men's soccer team and later served as an assistant coach for six years.

Cunningham will oversee all aspects of NCAA compliance. He will work with athletic department personnel to ensure that Boise State policies, procedures, and education are in accordance with NCAA standards. Cunningham will report to the President's Office through the Office of the General Counsel.

Cunningham worked as TCU's assistant director of compliance before being promoted to assistant athletic director for compliance in 2007. He previously served as a compliance coordinator at University of Maryland. Cunningham is a graduate of TCU and received his law degree from the University of Nebraska.

"We are delighted to have John Cunningham on board as our executive director of NCAA compliance," Kustra said. "He has significant hands-on experience in compliance, excellent administrative skills, and tremendous intellect. He is the ideal individual to lead Boise State in the critical area of compliance with NCAA rules and regulations."

Cunningham's responsibilities include overseeing education of student-athletes, coaches, boosters and other stakeholders regarding NCAA and Mountain West regulations. He is also in charge of monitoring activities such as recruiting, eligibility certification, financial aid, and benefits. His duties also include serving as a liaison between the university and the NCAA and Mountain West Conference on compliance matters.
