WAC Announces All-Academic Honors

BOISE, Idaho The Western Athletic Conference named 43 student-athletes from Boise State University to its all-academic team, Wednesday.

The Broncos placed 36 student-athletes from its spring sports teams on the list, and picked up seven more individual honors for freshmen and transfer students competing in fall and winter seasons during the 2006-07 academic year.

A total of 276 spring student-athletes were named to the list, while 174 freshmen and transfers were also honored. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic year, have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s contests.

Leading the way for Broncos competing in the spring was the women’s track and field team, which boasted a school-high 11 members to the all-academic squad. Seniors Amber Campos, Rebecca Guyette and Eleni Ypsilanti, juniors Annika Hjelm, Jamie Hubbs, Chaly Jones, Kayleen McDowell, Megan Olivetti, Paige Olivetti, and Nerisha Phillip, and sophomore Kendra Hernandez each earned a place on the all-academic team. Freshman Jenna Marshall also earned honors, as she was named to the all-academic freshman team.

The men’s track and field team placed eight student-athletes on the all-academic squad: seniors Brandon Christoffersen and Nick Cunningham, juniors Tyson Berg, Cody Eaton, Matt Schmasow, Jarrod Stevens, and Simon Wardhaugh and sophomore Eric Demers were each honored.

The men’s tennis team placed six student-athletes on the all-academic list, the most for a men’s tennis team in the conference. Juniors Piotr Dilaj, Eric Roberson, Luke Shields, and Brent Werbeck, sophomore Clancy Shields and freshman Blake Boswell were each named all-academic.

The women’s tennis team boasted five student-athletes to the list, including: senior Tiffany Coll, junior Polina Kokoulina, sophomores Laura Baum and Jana Mackova, and freshmen Bianca Jochimsen.

The women’s golf team placed four student-athletes on the team: seniors Katie Street and Lindsey Huebert, junior Nicole Olson and sophomore Mandi Hedberg.

Freshman Robbie Richards rounded out the spring sports all-academic team, representing the men’s golf team on the list.

The Bronco gymnastics and volleyball teams each placed three student-athletes on the freshman team. Katelyn O’Donnell, Katie Tuller and Raquel Turnbow represented the Bronco gymnasts on the all-academic freshman team, while Elise Ardron, Katie Lewis and Jeanene Rose represented the Bronco volleyball team on the list. Freshman Kaylea Perenon of the soccer team also made the freshman squad.
