Boise State Earns 83 Mountain West Scholar-Athlete Awards

BOISE, Idaho - The Mountain West announced its 2011-12 Scholar-Athlete Award recipients on Wednesday (June 20) naming 70 Boise State student-athletes as honorees. The 70 Broncos represented 83 total awards, some earning multiple sport nods out of the 14 Boise State sports represented. Boise State was second in total awards earned, following behind New Mexico's 106 awards.

Thirteen (13) Boise State student- athletes were honored in both cross country and track and field (one man, 12 women).

Two Broncos, Erin Kohlbeck (swimming and diving) and Will Lohman (track and field), sit amongst the top of the MW's list with 4.00 grade point averages.

The Boise State women's track and field team earned the second-most honors out of any sport from any school, totaling 16 honorees. New Mexico's women's track and field team led the league in all sports with 17 honorees.

Boise State's women's cross country tallied 14 award winners, while swimming and diving had 11 honorees. In total, 14 Boise State sports were represented, adding football (8 honorees), soccer (8), men's track and field (5), softball (4), women's tennis (4), women's basketball (3), men's cross country (3), women's golf (3), men's tennis (2), men's basketball (1) and volleyball (1) to the already mentioned sports.

TCU was third in total awards earned with 65, while Air Force earned 64 and Colorado State earned 63 awards. Wyoming collected 60 nods with UNLV (50) and San Diego State (41) rounding out the league.

A total of 471 student-athletes throughout the league were honored, including 39 individuals who have achieved a 4.00 or higher cumulative grade point average over two or more terms, and 61 student-athletes who were recognized in multiple sports. 

The MW Scholar-Athlete Award is one of the highest academic honors bestowed by the Conference. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in an NCAA-sponsored sport.
