WAC Announces All-Academic Honors

BOISE, Idaho The Western Athletic Conference named 64 student-athletes from Boise State University to its all-academic team, Wednesday.

The Broncos placed 39 student-athletes from its spring sports teams on the list, and picked up 25 more individual honors for freshmen and transfer students competing in fall and winter seasons during the 2007-08 academic year.

A total of 282 spring student-athletes were named to the list, while 266 freshmen and transfers were also honored. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic year, have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s contests.

Leading the way for Broncos competing in the spring was the men’s track and field team, which boasted a school-high 17 members to the all-academic squad. Seniors Caleb Cazier, Nicholas Cunningham, Savvas Diakonikolas, Cody Eaton, Matthew Schmasow, Jarrod Stevens, David Walden and Simon Wardhaugh, juniors Eric Demers, and Ryan Grinnell, and sophomores Marlon Douglas and Pontus Thomee each earned a place on the all-academic team. Freshmen Sawyer Bosch, Kevin Higgs, and Brian Pierre also earned honors, as they were named to the all-academic team.

The women’s track and field team placed 14 student-athletes on the all-academic squad: senior Chalyn Jones, juniors Eleni Kafourou, Kayleen McDowell, Megan Olivetti, Paige Olivetti, Nerisha Phillip and Pamila Ward, sophomores Annelise Bertleson and Laura Johnson, and freshmen Whitney Adams, Chelsea Cazier, Carly Gerard and Christa Hughes were each honored.

The men’s tennis team placed six student-athletes on the all-academic list, the most for a men’s tennis team in the conference. Seniors Piotr Dilaj, Eric Roberson, Luke Shields, and Brent Werbeck, and juniors Clancy Shields and Paul Koenke were each named all-academic.

The women’s tennis team boasted five student-athletes to the list, including: senior Polina Kokoulina, juniors Laura Baum, Jana Mackova, and Klaudia Wlodarczyk, and sophomore Bianca Jochimsen.

The WAC Champion gymnastics team listed five freshmen on the all-academic list: Mallory Dziawura, Amy Glass, Kelsey Lang, Hannah Redmon, and Cassandra Tycast.

The women’s basketball team placed four student athletes on the team: juniors Jamia Malone and Brittany Moore, and freshmen Sierra Moeller and Melissa Rima.

The first recruiting class for the women’s swimming and diving team placed four on the all-academic team: Allison Hall, Rachael Meisner, Kim Nelson, and Andrea Thiltgen.

The women’s golf team placed three student-athletes on the team: senior Nikki Olson, junoir Mandi Hedberg, and sophomore Iris Ocariza.

Freshmen Austin Pettis and Brandyn Thompson represented the football team on the all-academic list.

The Bronco men’s golf, men’s basketball, soccer and volleyball teams each placed one student-athlete on the all-academic team. Sophomore John Baranco represnted the Bronco men’s golf team on the all-academic team, junior Mark Sanchez representing the men’s basketball team, while junior transfrer Maren Ericson represented the Bronco volleyball team on the list. Freshman Shannon Saxton of the soccer team also made the freshman squad.
