Broncos Close Regular Season Against Spartans
The Boise State men’s basketball team will close out its regular season against San Jose State, Saturday (March 5). Tip-off between the Broncos (18-11, 9-6 WAC) and Spartans (15-13, 5-10 WAC) is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Taco Bell Arena.
WAC TOURNAMENT SEEDING
The Broncos have locked up the No. 2 seed in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament. Boise State will receive a double-bye into the conference semifinals.
The team’s first game will be played March 11 (Friday), at 10 p.m. (MT) at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. The game will be televised live on ESPN2.
RICE IS WINNINGEST FIRST-YEAR HC
Win or lose against the Spartans, first-year head coach Leon Rice has locked down the best regular-season winning percentage for a first-year head coach in Boise State history. Rice is 18-11 (.621), and Bobby Dye and Rod Jensen were each 15-13 (.536).
The Broncos are looking to win seven-consecutive games for the first time since 2003-04. Boise State won its final six regular-season games and its first game of the WAC Tournament.
Since the first meeting between the two schools during the 1988-89 season, the Broncos lead the series by a 21-2 margin, including a perfect 11-0 mark at home. Boise State is 17-2 against the Spartans since joining the WAC prior to the 2001-02 season.
The Broncos have won six-consecutive games for the second time this season, and have won four-straight WAC games.
San Jose State is coming off of a 77-71 loss at home to Hawai’i, though the Spartans had won four-straight prior to the loss. SJSU is 6-7 on the road this season, including a mark of 2-5 in conference games.
ANDERSON SINGLE-SEASON MARKS
La’Shard Anderson has 444 points in 2010-11 - the 50th 400-point season in school history and the 32nd-most by a Bronco in a single season. Anderson also has 137 assists, the fifth-most in school single-season history, and 73 steals, the fourth-most.
The Broncos posted two road sweeps during the conference portion of their 2010-11 season, the first time since 1998-99 - when the team was in the Big West - that Boise State accomplished the feat.
Senior guard La’Shard Anderson entered this week ranked 11th in the country in steals, averaging 2.5 per game.
BRONCOS AMONGST NATION’S BEST
Boise State entered this week ranked second in the nation in turnover margin, forcing 5.7 more turnovers per game than committing. The Broncos also ranked 14th in steals, averaging 9.0 per game.
Bob Behler is in his third season as the “Voice of the Broncos,” and his 25th calling college basketball games. Joining Behler, and also in his third season, is former Bronco Abe Jackson, who played for Boise State from 1998-2002.
All Bronco games will be broadcast on the Bronco Radio Network, with KBOI 670 AM serving as the flagship station. Games can also be heard live at broncosports.com.
