Athlete of the Week: 1/18-24

BOISE, Idaho – Junior Levi Jones went 2-0 last week, including an upset win, to earn this week’s Bronco Athlete of the Week honors. Jones defeated Filip Novachkov of Cal Poly, who is ranked No. 4 in the nation in the 141-pound weight class, to help the Broncos to a 3-0 record on the week.

Jones, a native of Nine Mile Falls, Wash., scored a huge victory when he defeated Novachkov 8-5. The victory proved to be crucial in the Broncos staying unbeaten in the Pac-10 as they went on to beat Cal Poly 23-13. Jones earned his first win of the week with a 5-4 decision over Adin Duenas of Cal State Fullerton. The victory helped the Broncos defeat the Titans 28-15.

The Broncos will continue their quest to stay undefeated in the Pac-10 with a pair of duals at UC Davis and Stanford on Jan. 29-30.

Both the men’s and women’s basketball team will play a pair of WAC games this week ad both will play on ESPNU when the men face Idaho tonight and the women travel to Fresno State on Wednesday. On Saturday, both teams will be back in action at Taco Bell Arena for a doubleheader. The men’s tennis team will travel to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship this week and the gymnastics team makes the trip to Logan, Utah to face Utah State on Friday. The third annual Big Splash event will take place on Saturday when the swimming and diving team faces New Mexico State.
